Falling Away
04:49
|

FALLING AWAY
You keep looking my way
I’ve got nothing to say
The moon is hiding her face
The stars are fading away
The heat it hangs so heavy
My feet, a dusty rose
The light it comes on slow
And everything it shows was always so
The night in my lungs and line of the trees
Against the sky, keeping me in place
Stay a little while
The dawn is falling apart
The birds have gone today
As the madding morning comes
The night in my lungs and the line of the trees
Against the sky, keeping me in place
I don’t know how to find you
Round waterways, in candlelight
In music halls, I’m listening for something
Before the day goes
Down

Miles Between
04:02
|
|||
Not so long ago
The whiskey and wine
I saw you dancing colours round the room
We went south to the sea
To find the way
The restless night gave in to the asking
You were my eyes of the open road
Where the red kites fly
The crimson sun goes down as the night comes in
The sail billows black
At the edge of the sea
A storm coming on
Adrift and unseen
Lain on the grass
Beneath a reeling sky
We did not seem to see the falling
For now the cold wind just blows
Our love away
We’ve got nothing, nowhere and no one to hang on to
The sail billows black
Where the sea meets the sky
I'm not coming back
I’d be a fool to try
Maybe I love you still
I always will
A refuge and regret to know each day
I’ll head north to San Jose
With the road stretched out
The stars will sing to sleep the aching
The sail billows black
At the edge of the sea
The wind cries out
For the miles between

Wrong Side of You
03:09
|
|||
Heading out on my own
Nothing to live or die for
Summer takes the edge away
Voices lost in the falling
What was I thinking
Getting on the wrong side
Getting on the wrong side of you
What’ll I do when I see you again
What’ll we do come the morning
Heading out into the wilding world
Sundown, still sinking
What was I thinking
Getting on the wrong side
Getting on the wrong side of you
You came along when I needed you
But I don’t know where I’m going
I don’t know where to go today
Maybe north of the border
Or head back California way
And find another lover

Cradle to the Crow
03:50
|
|||
How've you been spending these long nights
I was worrying about you, heard that you're all right
From the cradle to crow, sitting on the fence
Searching for the reasons, the recompense
Hold my sorrows at the door
I'm waiting on tomorrow, nothing more
Baby you're the one I'm thinking on
Some days are easy but it turns on a pin
Sweeps all before you, draws the damage in
My mind's a fool when I long for you
A river with no reason, a sky with no blue
Hold my sorrows at the door
I'm waiting on tomorrow, nothing more
Baby you're the one I'm still thinking on
I'm sitting by the rails, keeping by the sun
Falling into winter, soon the summer comes
Somebody asking where you're heading to
I see no reason to run

Stay A Little Longer
03:11
|
|||
Come closer to me now
I want to see you in the light
You caught my eye in this indifferent space
So just stay a little longer
Our sorrows may be almost done
Tomorrow drags us through the dark
I know that leaving is like a howl in the wind
So just stay a little longer
I want to just go on and on
I think I've found my love in you
But I feel that you're drifting away
So just stay a little longer
The stars cold and fading fast
I swear the sun will be back soon
Pitch black, can hardly trace your silhouette
So just stay a little longer

The Root
03:45
|
|||
Every time I reach the crest
It's five miles and many nights left
Nothing to nothing, is that all that remains
There's nothing to do about it anyway
I want
To come in from the cold
To reckon with my soul and see it through
So long
Have I been dancing round the root
And sung whatever song is drifting above the avenues
Maybe so, but I've been feeling insecure
What's the use, I don't need this anymore
But I miss you
No more
Will I be hidden in the frame
And sidelined by the gaze and tripping up
Too long
Have I spent beside myself
Colours darker than the light turned toward the sea

The Songbird
03:45
|
|||
Do you remember how we met in the depths
The morning mist always rose
Oh I remember how we sang and we danced
The night held its head in its hands
The stage was set
To make fools of lovers
Tyrants of thinkers yet
Do you remember the white lines of the road
Heading somewhere nobody knows
Oh I remember when you said do you doubt
Would you have the strength to let go
The stage was set
To make fools of lovers
Stories half told, half met
Do you remember the nightingale's flight
Its song took the night unawares
Oh I remember how the songbird declined
To lend us a sign in the dark
The stage was set
To make fools of lovers
Tyrants of thinkers yet
Do you remember when the sky hammered down
The morning hung heavy as a storm
Yes I remember how we clawed in the dark
The warmth of a spark lifting away
The stage was set
To make fools of lovers
Stories half told, half met

The Arbour
03:33
|
|||
Slow, I've come to the answer
I'm losing the way I once knew you
It's so hard to go from one to the other
To the streets, from the rooftops, from the arbour
Where once all was read it's more unknowable now
Like a fine timepiece with the minute hand gone
Like an old string bow that's been loosened for good
Slow, it seems to take forever
Those long black clouds just getting longer
It's like a drawing tide that doesn't want to be drawn
Like a new flung leaf with a wind setting in
Like a homemade scarf with the stitch wearing thin
Slow, I've come to the answer
I'm losing the way I once knew you
It's so hard to go from one to the other
To the streets, from the rooftops, from the arbour
Time's heal just hurts in the way that it numbs
Like a clawing of eyes when you're trying to see
But I do not want to go without a second of it
For what is life and love if you have to forget
All you once held so close you'd die losing it
And I still know your eyes and I know what they say
No matter how far apart or how close we'll stay

'Cross the Boughs
02:47
|
|||
Do not think on the passing days
The solitude of a mind out of time
The monochrome of the old country lanes
I'm leaving, got to go
Yes I'm leaving got to go
I try to stay at the edge of it all
But it drags you down, a brawling, beaten fall
Have good reason, don't be the pawn
I'm leaving got to go
Yes I'm leaving got to go
Let me lay these thoughts next to yours
As winter throws darkness 'cross the boughs
I don't want to go

Slower than the Sea
03:35
|
|||
There's still so much I don't know about you
The trick of the evening stretching out
But I do know the colours that I see
And I'm drawn to the deepest shade
Is it too soon to wrest my words this way
Too soon to drop it all and say
We're lifting, spinning in the breeze
I’ll catch you if you catch me
We're going faster than the light
Cracking and splintered through the heat
Pulled with a force into the earth and back again
I'm losing my hours to you
There's a boldness and a beauty in the way
You hold my eyes and close the air between
You can pull the chaos from the room
And still my mind when you say
Let’s take it slower than the sea
Turning from the shore without a sigh
Drawn with a will, without a thought of anything
I'm losing my hours to you

Ned Roberts London, UK
Ned first started gigging when living up in York, playing old folk covers and the odd Dylan tune.
